The move from CA to SC has been tough on the training regime. Bike lanes are non-existant, shoulders are spotty, and drivers aren't overly accepting of cyclists. The humidity is a shock to the system. The pool isn't close and the hours aren't terrific. Combine all of that with the demands of a "new" job, and the ~20 pounds of weight gain provide a good proxy of how much (little) I've managed to work out.
That said, the boys and I have started to get in routine on the weekends that involve going to the pool, and while it's not much, I got in a few (emphasis on that word) laps yesterday while they were playing. As minimal of a workout as it was, my muscles feel a bit sore today, which attests to how out of shape I'm in. It's a good feeling though - one that I've missed.
I will continue to carve out sessions a few times a week to start on my road to recovery.
