No, not 38 hours to the MS Bike Tour, but 38 hours until my Half-Ironman triathlon in Racine, WI. We were going to head up to Chicago area (Elgin) last night to stay with the in-laws and show off Isaac, but the weather was nasty and I didn't get home from work until late. It would have been past midnight and that thought wasn't very appealing.
We went to bed early and I was up by 5:15, good training for Sunday, when I'll have to rise even a bit earlier than that to get in a decent breakfast. It took me awhile to wake up the Mrs. and pour her into the car, but we were on the road and stuck in traffic by 7:30. It was a grueling ride up. The weather was great, but just being stuck in the car that long is brutal. I've been listening to Failed States by Noam Chomsky - books on CD. It's not the most uplifting of books, but certainly an eye-opener about the abuse of power we seem to "enjoy" in the U.S. I'm a first-time Chomsky reader and his bias is quite evident, but it's still got my attention.
We are pleased to be here and will be going to dinner (carbo-loading) in about 30 minutes. I may try to squeeze in a quick run before it gets dark to move the legs a bit. Nothing too intense, but it will be good after a few days of no activity.
I'm excited and a bit nervous about the race. The weather ought to be terrific (high of 77 degrees according to http://www.weather.com/), and it will feel good to open up... as long as I don't go too fast too soon. I'll spend a little time tuning up the bike tomorrow morning.
